A Morning To Remember
Arsonist Destroys East Moriches Fire House:
Four Trucks Destroyed
March 26, 1970

At 2:45 am on the morning of March 26, 1970 Phil Johnson, a volunteer fireman who lives adjacent to the firehouse (approximately 100 yards away) was awakened by his wife who smelled smoke. Johnson looked out of his bedroom window, saw the smoke in the vicinity of the firehouse and called in the alarm as "a fire in the vicinity of the firehouse". Within minutes firemen arrived at the scene virtually helpless as the firehouse was engulfed in intense heat and smoke, therefore unable to put their equipment to use. Meanwhile, a fireman yelled to Johnson to phone for mutual aid from Center Moriches. Then as the East Moriches First Assistant Chief arrived on the scene he radioed for mutual aid to both Eastport and Center Moriches, our neighboring districts. Realizing that the fire could be potentially dangerous because of the lack of hydrants in the district, the cold, the nearness of the meeting hall and the darkness of the hour, the First Assistant Chief radioed for assistance from Mastic, Westhampton Beach, Manorville and Riverhead. What had to be created was a water shield to protect the attached meeting hall.

As the mutual aid companies arrived a masterpiece of teamwork commenced. A Center Moriches Pumper went into action at the well approximately 1,200 feet from the blaze with a 2 1/2" hose supplying water to other departments who went into series with the Center Moriches hose lay. The Eastport Fire Department proceeded to a second well laying a double lay, 1,700 feet of 3" hose in the process. The work of the pump operator was outstanding as he was able to supply working trucks with a 22 ft. draft of water.

With a source of water from the district wells being supplied by Center Moriches and Eastport and tanker trucks from Riverhead and Mastic supplying another major source of water, the Center Moriches aerial truck, primarily, and the Westhampton Beach snorkel, ably assisting, were able to create the water shield needed to save the adjacent meeting hall. Meanwhile, other trucks from Manorville, Center Moriches and Eastport also concentrated their efforts on containing the blaze.

A total of 18 pieces of apparatus and 250 volunteers working the equipment were able to confine and control the fire within two hours of the alarm but not before the firehouse and four fire-fighting trucks were destroyed.

For the next twelve hours fire protection was afforded to the East Moriches Fire District by the Center Moriches and Eastport Fire Departments, who mutually agreed to split our district for fire protection.

By evening time that day East Moriches was again providing their residents fire protection due to loaned fire vehicles from East Quogue, Center Moriches, Mastic, Riverhead and Stony Brook. Countless other departments also lent vehicles and equipment needed for fire-fighting purposes. All of these vehicles and equipment were stored in a utility garage built by the district in 1965 and located about 75 yards northeast of the firehouse.

(Fire marshals deemed that the fire was arson and later a suspect was arrested and convicted of the offense.)
