History of the East Moriches Fire Department - Page 2

In 1915 the membership voted to purchase a new property to erect a larger truck house and meeting hall. The property was on Pine Street measuring 45' x 90' at a cost of $450.00. The original truck house and property were offered for sale. The truck house was sold for $210.00 and the land was sold for $800.00. At the meeting of June 12, 1915 the membership voted to erect a 35' x 72' truck house and meeting hall not to exceed the cost of $2,200.00.

In 1922 motorized equipment was available to respond to alarms. The membership made a decision to purchase their first motorized chemical fire apparatus. This is the announcement of the new REO Chemical Engine:

The Patchogue Advance
June 16, 1922

"East Moriches Gets Fine Motor Fire Truck"
"The East Moriches Fire Department has purchased a motor chemical firefighting apparatus of the latest type. The machine arrived at the freight yard on Wednesday and will be immediately placed into service. The outfit consists of four 35-gallon chemical tanks with two (2) lines of hose and six 5-gallon hand fire extinguishers which are carried in racks on the running board, and has a complete outfit of ladders mounted on an REO speed chassis. It may well be considered the last word in the way of being an efficient and practical apparatus.
The money with which the outfit was purchased was raised entirely by subscription and it speaks well for the loyalty of the village to its fire company when it is known that the entire amount necessary to purchase this machine was pledged within one week of the conception of the purpose to secure and up-to-date engine, which will cost in excess of $3,000.00. Much credit may be given to the Chief, Otto Mampe, his deputies and the entire fire company in putting the deal through so expeditiously."

The first fire alarm that the new truck answered was a call to lend assistance to a fire that broke out in an eastern neighboring village. The truck rumbled across dirt roads to the scene of the fire. The firemen were chastised by their eastern counterparts for thinking that their newfangled contraption could possibly help fight a fire so far out of their reach. But then the firemen began to turn the cranks on the water tanks and the resulting pressure sent the water arching high into the air and up to the steeple where the fire was soon extinguished. (Water pressure was developed when preloaded water, baking soda and acid in the tank are mixed.) To supply this modern piece of fire fighting equipment the Company purchased a model "A" truck to supply the REO with water.

The needs of the Hook & Ladder Company were growing and it became necessary to change the status of the Company. In 1923 it became necessary to become a Fire District in order to raise funds through tax assessments. Prior to this time all monies were raised through dues, fund raisers and subscriptions. The Fire District made its first purchase, a 1930 International Pumper with a 500 GPM Rotary gear Peter Pirsch pump. In 1935 a Chevrolet Booster truck was purchased to provide further protection to the Fire District.

In 1927, the East Moriches Hook & Ladder Company applied for a charter to organize a Boy Scout Troop. The charter was granted and Troop 29 began. To this day Troop 29 has the distinction of having been continuously sponsored by the original sponsoring institution in the United States.

As the Community has grown so has the East Moriches Fire Department. We now have 78 Volunteer members and all are proud to continue their dedication to providing emergency fire and rescue services to our Community.
